Peng Mok IB Fellowship Scholarship (Harry Ainlay High School) Fund

Peng Mok was a brilliant scholar, but it was his personal qualities that made him truly exceptional:  his dedication to helping others, his thoughtfulness, and his spirit of friendship. His family and friends created the Peng Mok IB Fellowship Scholarship to honour these qualities, and to celebrate students who demonstrate them.

A bright student, Peng helped his classmates from an early age. In grade three students lined up at his desk for help if the teacher was busy. In junior high, his classmates phoned him for help with homework. In high school, while preparing for International Baccalaureate (IB) exams Peng was always positive and encouraged others if they felt overwhelmed. If someone needed tutoring, even at the last minute, Peng happily provided it. If someone was stressed and needed a laugh, he was there with a joke. Not only did Peng graduate with the IB diploma, he was the 1989 Harry Ainlay valedictorian for a graduating class of 800 students.

Peng continued helping his fellow students at the University of Alberta, becoming well known as an unofficial tutor for science and engineering courses. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, he was recruited by a US-based technology company and relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a highly valued employee and coworker, not just for his wealth of knowledge, but for his dedicated and helpful approach as well. Peng not only worked hard, he also trained hard as an endurance athlete, becoming an Ironman in 2008.

Peng loved people, food and travel. He stayed in touch with his friends around the world not just with emails, text messages and on social media, but with handwritten cards, phone calls, and visits. He was the perfect host, the perfect guest, and a fun and adventurous travelling companion.

The Peng Mok IB Fellowship Scholarship is for an International Baccalaureate (IB) student graduating from Harry Ainlay High School who is known for supporting their fellow students. This could be by demonstrating any or all of the following:

  • maintaining positivity with everyone around them
  • contributing to a mentally supportive culture
  • helping and encouraging others when things seem difficult or overwhelming
  • showing initiative and/or leadership in providing emotional support to those around them
  • sensitivity and insight into the needs of others
  • fostering a collaborative school environment
  • is a mentor, coach, tutor and/or friend when needed

The student must have conditional acceptance from a post-secondary institution. Academic achievement is a secondary consideration. By recognizing and rewarding those with Peng’s traits, the Peng Mok IB Fellowship Scholarship encourages students to help make the world a better place.
